When it comes to building a strong, long-lasting foundation for asphalt paving, the base layer is everything. At Valley Blacktopping, we’ve worked with all types of aggregate, and over time, we’ve found that recycled Class 5 rock consistently outperforms the rest, especially when it comes to driveways and parking lots.

But first, let’s break down the options.

What is Class 5 Aggregate?

Class 5 is a compactable blend of crushed rock and fines used as a base material beneath asphalt or concrete. It provides structure, drainage, and long-term durability for paved surfaces.

There are two common types:

  • Recycled Class 5 Rock – Made from crushed concrete, asphalt, and reclaimed gravel.

  • Virgin Class 5 (Lime rock) – A virgin material made from crushed limestone sourced from quarries.

Why We Choose Recycled Class 5 Rock

After years of hands-on experience across Minnesota, we’ve come to prefer recycled Class 5 rock for most base installations. Here’s why:

✅ Superior Stability

Recycled Class 5 offers excellent compaction and structural integrity. The mix of angular crushed concrete and asphalt binds together tightly, creating a dense base layer that resists shifting and settling over time.

✅ Proven Performance

We’ve seen consistently strong results using recycled material under both residential driveways and heavy-use commercial lots. Properly compacted, it holds up as well if not better—than virgin alternatives.

✅ Cost-Effective Without Compromise

Recycled materials typically come at a lower cost than lime rock, but we don’t view that as a trade-off. You get equal or better performance while saving money a win for homeowners and commercial clients alike.

✅ Environmentally Responsible

Using recycled aggregate reduces the need for quarrying virgin rock, keeping concrete and asphalt waste out of landfills. It’s a sustainable choice that aligns with today’s environmental values.

What About Virgin Class 5?

Virgin Class 5 is still a dependable, widely used material. It offers a clean, uniform appearance and consistent gradation, which can be important for specialty projects or areas with specific drainage or soil concerns.

We’re not here to knock Virgin Class 5 but in our experience, recycled Class 5 rock delivers more value, better results, and greater sustainability for most driveways and parking lots.

The Bottom Line

Every great paving job starts with a solid foundation. That’s why we almost exclusively use recycled Class 5 rock it’s strong, stable, proven, and environmentally sound.
