OUR HISTORY
Valley Blacktopping was founded in 1976 by Russell Johnson, who built the company on a simple belief: asphalt work should be done honestly, correctly, and with pride in the result.
Russell began his career in the early 1960s after moving from northern Minnesota to the Twin Cities, where he took a laborer position with a large asphalt paving company. Through hard work and a natural understanding of the industry, he quickly advanced and became the youngest asphalt plant operator in the Twin Cities. During that time, he supplied asphalt for major projects throughout the area, including the original construction of Burnsville Center.
With limited resources but deep experience, Russell started Valley Blacktopping with a focus on quality workmanship, fair pricing, and long term customer relationships.

A CONTINUING LEGACY
​
After more than four decades in the paving industry, Russell passed away in January of 2024. Today, the company is owned and operated by his sons, Ritchy and Scott Johnson, who continue to uphold the values and standards the company was built on.
Valley Blacktopping remains a family owned business, now involving a third generation of the Johnson family. That continuity provides stability, accountability, and a long term mindset that guides how we approach every project.

Valley Blacktopping now serves both residential and commercial clients, with a focus on projects where planning, experience, and execution quality matter. From residential driveway installations to complex commercial asphalt projects, we approach each job with careful evaluation, clear communication, and an emphasis on long term performance.
Our team brings decades of combined experience across asphalt paving, site work, and project coordination. That experience allows us to anticipate challenges, manage projects responsibly, and deliver results clients can rely on.
